Ulla Kjarval and Adriana Velez

What if you went to the state fair and the meat-on-a-stick was pasture-raised Berkshire pork? The grilled corn organic and covered in queso blanco from grass-fed milk? What if you could talk with the farmers and finally learn why they decided to turn to sustainable agriculture? What if you could ask them how “going organic” impacts their farming life on a day-to-day basis? What if you could actually visit that farm? And what if you could taste some of that farmer’s produce and buy it?

This is the idea behind Green State Fair.

Green State Fair: an interactive online community for farmers, consumers and chefs to learn about and discuss sustainable agriculture. This is a virtual county fair for small farmers–existing outside the industrial food system–where they can educate consumers and share ideas. This is a community for consumers who are hungry for connections with sustainable farmers–and hungry for food grown with care.

Ulla loves reading about, eating, and cooking food. Born in Iceland, she grew up on a farm in the Hudson Valley of New York State. Ulla splits her time between her parents’ farm in the Catskills, where she raises cattle and sheep, and Manhattan, where she does photography, design, and recipe development. She blogs at Goldilocks finds Manhattan.

Adriana is the mother of a six-year-old boy and an occasional food writer. She is also communications coordinator for the Brooklyn Food Coalition. She blogs at Dinner 4 Three.
